What are you worth?

Posted by Pat on October 23, 2022 in Uncategorized |

There are people who can live their whole lives with the belief that they are worth nothing. Whether or not it is because of the message they received from their parents or friends, these people don’t know what their true value is and it makes them doubt their own skills and even the things they deserve from the world.

If you feel that you don’t know your value, this parable will show you that each of us is a priceless treasure and you just have to know where and how to find it.

A boy asked his father “What is the value of my life?” Instead of answering, the father placed a colorful stone, shiny and smooth in his hand and said “Go sell this stone in the market. If someone asks about its price, just raise two fingers and say nothing more.”

The boy went to the market and a woman asked him “How much does the stone cost? I’d like to put it in my garden.” The boy just raised two fingers and the woman said “Two dollars? I’ll take it!” The boy went and told his father happily that she had bought it for two dollars.

The father gave him a similar stone and told him to take the stone to the museum and if someone wants to buy it, not to say a word but just raise two fingers. The boy went and a man in a suit there asked  “How much does the stone cost? I want to add it to my rare stone collection.” Saying nothing, the boy raised two fingers and the man said “Two hundred dollars? I’ll take it!”

The boy was in shock and instead of selling it, ran back and told his father.

The father listened and told him to take the stone to a store that sells precious gems and show it to the owner, not to say anything, but just raise two fingers.

The boy did and the owner asked where he had found the stone as it was one of the rarest stones in the world and he wanted to buy it. Asked how much, the boy said nothing and just raised two fingers. The store owner said “No problem, I’ll pay you $20,000 for the stone.”

Instead of selling it, the boy ran back to his father to tell with pride about the owner wanting to buy it for $20,000.

The father said, “Son, do you understand the value of your life now? It doesn’t matter where you came from, what color your skin is, or even how much money you have. What matters is the place you choose to be in and who you surround yourself with.”

“There are people who go through a whole lifetime believing they are only worth two dollars, when in fact, they have just surrounded themself with people who see them as such.”

“But everyone has a diamond inside them and we can choose to surround ourselves with people who see our worth and the diamond inside of us. We choose whether to place ourselves in a marketplace or in a precious gem store.”

“My son, you too can choose to see another’s priceless value and you also have the ability to help them see the diamond hiding inside of them. Choose the people who surround you wisely, it can make all the difference in your life.”

And remind those around you of their value!

What can you learn?

Posted by Pat on October 16, 2022 in Uncategorized |

It may seem like a bit of a stretch to say there are life lessons to be learned from that jack-o’-lantern you carve for Halloween, but see what you think about these! (even if your pumpkin might be less dramatic) 1. Get inside-We need to be willing to open ourselves up to the possibilities ahead. […]

Are you a cook or a chef?

Posted by Pat on October 9, 2022 in Uncategorized |

It may seem as if these words are interchangable: after all both individuals may wear a chef’s hat or coat, work in a kitchen and prepare food. However, every chef was once a cook who went on to learn new skills and create new combinations that cooks can then follow. As Wolfgang Puck, the celebrity […]

Lessons from a squirrel?

Posted by Pat on October 2, 2022 in Uncategorized |

Squirrels are just small rodents to some folks, but to admirers they are high flying acrobats, fuzzy-tailed philosophers, scampering tree huggers and resourceful survivors. (They are also rather cute!) Here are 4 (+1 extra!) life lessons we can learn from our squirrel friends. 1. We all know this easy one: save for the future. 2. […]

Can you be creative?

Posted by Pat on September 25, 2022 in Uncategorized |

Sometimes we think that we are not creative; that the gift has passed us by. But we have each… come up with creative solutions to family problems, figured out a clever workaround to not having the perfect tool to make a repair, said what needed to be said, but tactfully and compassionately. Here are two […]

If less is more and if a short sermon is more memorable than a long one…then here are some quotes of only four words that you might find meaningful! From some philosophical folks… From some business folks… “Aim for the highest.” Andrew Carnegie “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” Steve Jobs “Whatever happens, take responsibility.” Tony Robbins […]

The Spare Change Principle

Posted by Pat on September 11, 2022 in Uncategorized |

I saw a video from a few years ago by Jon Acuff that made good sense to me. He shared that he had run 1,000 miles the previous year. How? Short answer: he ran a lot. Long answer: he used the “Spare Change Principle.” And what was that? It was his willingness to do an […]

Response-Ability

Posted by Pat on September 4, 2022 in Uncategorized |

We have the responsibility to choose. And we have the ability as well! We can respond or we can react. And the quality of our life depends on the choice we make. We know there is a difference between trying to control everything in our life and taking charge of our life. After all, haven’t […]

The weather is just the weather…

Posted by Pat on August 28, 2022 in Uncategorized |

Has our summer been sweltering, oppressive, scorching, or just hot? Just like Calvin, we often describe our weather as “too much!” Let’s refuse to listen to weather reports. Weather reporters this past winter often described the weather as being gloomy, dismal, or miserable rather than just saying it was cold, rainy or windy! The weather […]

Don’t let the tail wag the dog…

Posted by Pat on August 21, 2022 in Uncategorized |

So, what does that mean? It means don’t let the smallest or least important part of something be in control of the larger or more important parts. And this is not just in dogs. The purpose of a tail is complicated. Not just for communication, but also for balance. A retriever in the water (me?) […]
